layers can also use the Protect from Magic prayer to lower the max hit of the Ice breath attack, but it is not as effective as any of the shields. The Wyverns attack with melee, ranged, and a freezing-breath attack, which can freeze players making them unable to attack. They have high Defence, high Attack and high Hitpoints making them very challenging opponents. They also require 72 Slayer to kill.
Using protect from melee Prayer and Prayer potions is recommended as they hit fairly high and regularly. Players can still take damage from the freezing-breath attack but much less than if you don't. However, the attack in which they jump up and glow is a ranged attack.
Therefore, ranging is possible with one-handed weapons because of the shield requirement, with the protect from Ranged prayer, only suffering damage from their ice breath. Taking several steps back while ranging them, and having the Ranged prayer activated will eliminate the chance of taking any damage.
It should be noted that they are not classified as undead, and as such not vulnerable to the effects of the Salve Amulet.
